Our vehicle

The ADS-DV by IMechE

The competition vehicle used by ARECE is an ADS-DV standing for Autonomous Driving Systems - Dedicated Vehicle. Produced by IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), it is a vehicle specially developed for the competition.

Electric

The ADS-DV also embarks a Velodyne Puck lidar, a Zed Stereo Camera with a 2,2k resolution and an onboard computer composed of a core i7 and a graphics card GTX 1050. A GPS system is also added to the car. All this onboard electric allows ARECE to implement on the onboard computer a software for the car to drive itself, developed by ARECE in Open Source.

The autonomous competitions

ARECE is participating at the Formula Student in the autonomous class. In this class, teams from all around the world compete to conceive, build, and test autonomous vehicles capable of following a track without any human intervention. The cars are then judged on their performance, their innovation, and their potential commercialisation throughout the static and dynamics events. The autonomous class arrived in the U.K. on the Silverstone track back in 2019, but the autonomous competition is also present in Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Swiss. The English competition is the only one to allow young teams to share an autonomous car for their first participation.

The autonomous vehicles allow for a better accesibility for disabled people or the ones that cannot drive. This technology could also offer a transportation solution that is reliable and affordable for the country side inhabitants. The use of these vehicles could also create new employment opportunities in the field of maintenance, of programmation and of exploitation.

Open-Source

The adoption of such technologies in the autonomous vehicles field allows for a development of innovation and collaboration in this field. It also allows for a better transparency and an adequate share of the benefits of this technology.
